Chiasognathus grantii, also known as Darwin’s beetle or Grant’s stag beetle, is a rare and striking specimen native to the temperate Nothofagus forests of Argentina and Chile. This beetle is particularly renowned for its dramatic sexual dimorphism, with males displaying enormously elongated jaws used in mating battles. Its rarity and the spectacular morphology make this beetle highly valuable not only to collectors but also to researchers studying evolutionary biology and entomology.

The first notable collection of Chiasognathus grantii was by Charles Darwin during his voyage on HMS Beagle, bringing significant scientific attention to this species. Today, these beetles are typically found during their active season by searching through the forests where they reside. Collectors and researchers locate these beetles by observing their behaviour, particularly the males’ tree-climbing and combat activities. Our preserved specimens have been responsibly sourced, ensuring minimal impact on the wild populations.

Our Chiasognathus grantii specimen is expertly preserved within a 12 cm high glass cloche, meticulously prepared to showcase the beetle’s intricate details and natural beauty. Every part of the beetle, from the robust, serrated jaws of the male to the finely granulated, iridescent elytra, is well-preserved. This preservation not only enhances its aesthetic value but also serves educational and scientific purposes, allowing detailed study of its features.
