These butterflies are especially recognised for the remarkable numerical patterns formed on the undersides of their hindwings by contrasting black, white, and orange markings. Their vivid dorsal colouration, delicate wing structure, and highly specialised scale arrangement make them among the most visually remarkable neotropical butterflies. Because of their fragile anatomy and naturally localised distribution within rainforest ecosystems, well-preserved specimens are highly valued by collectors, entomologists, and researchers studying mimicry, camouflage, and the evolution of visual signaling in Lepidoptera.

Discovery
Species of the genus Callicore inhabit humid lowland and montane forests, where they are typically encountered in sunlit clearings and along forest margins. Adult butterflies are diurnal and known for rapid, agile flight combined with brief resting periods on foliage and flowers. The larvae develop on specific tropical host plants, while adults feed on nectar, fermenting fruit, and mineral-rich moisture from damp substrates. Scientific attention toward Callicore butterflies has focused on the adaptive significance of their hindwing markings and their ecological interactions within dense rainforest environments. Specimens from Peru contribute valuable information regarding tropical biodiversity and the diversity of neotropical butterfly morphology.

Preservation
This Callicore specimen has been expertly preserved together with a dried bloom inside a glass cloche to maintain the butterfly’s delicate anatomical structures and natural colouration in exceptional condition. The preservation process stabilises the fragile wing membranes, microscopic scales, segmented antennae, and body morphology while protecting them from environmental deterioration. Particular attention has been given to preserving the symmetrical wing posture and the characteristic numerical hindwing markings that define the genus. The display serves both scientific and educational purposes, allowing detailed examination of one of the most distinctive butterfly groups within South American rainforest ecosystems.

Rarity and ValueCallicore species, commonly known as numberwing butterflies, are highly distinctive members of the family Nymphalidae native to the tropical forests of Peru and surrounding regions of South America.
