This remarkable lot features the magnificent Papilio rumanzovia, a striking swallowtail butterfly native to the tropical forests of the Philippines. Commonly known as the Scarlet Mormon, this species is celebrated for its dramatic colouration, combining velvety black wings with vivid crimson markings that create one of the most recognisable and captivating displays among Asian butterflies. The bold contrast of deep black and radiant red serves as both a natural defence mechanism and an expression of the extraordinary biodiversity found within the Philippine archipelago. Admired for its elegance and rarity, Papilio rumanzovia has become a highly sought-after specimen among collectors, entomologists, and natural history enthusiasts.

Rarity and Value: The rarity of Papilio rumanzovia is closely tied to the fragile ecosystems of the Philippines, where tropical forests continue to face pressure from habitat loss and environmental change. Although the species remains one of the most iconic butterflies of the region, finding specimens with perfectly preserved wing structure, colouration, and scale integrity is increasingly uncommon. Its vivid scarlet markings and restricted geographic distribution make it particularly desirable for scientific collections and decorative displays alike. A specimen preserved in excellent condition represents both a beautiful natural object and an important example of the unique biodiversity of Southeast Asia.

Discovery: Papilio rumanzovia is endemic to the Philippines, inhabiting tropical and subtropical forests where adults are commonly observed visiting flowering plants and forest clearings. The species belongs to the family Papilionidae, a group renowned for producing some of the world’s largest and most spectacular butterflies. The brilliant red colouration displayed by this species is unusual among swallowtails and contributes significantly to its popularity among naturalists. Ethical collection and preservation require extensive field knowledge, careful timing, and responsible sourcing practices that minimise disturbance to local ecosystems while supporting conservation awareness.

Human Touch: Once ethically sourced, the butterfly underwent a meticulous preservation process designed to maintain the integrity of its delicate scales, vibrant crimson markings, and graceful wing form. Skilled artisans carefully mounted and framed the specimen to showcase its natural symmetry and striking colouration while protecting it from environmental damage. The elegant presentation highlights both the scientific importance and artistic beauty of the butterfly, transforming a remarkable biological specimen into a lasting display piece. This framed Papilio rumanzovia serves as a celebration of the rich natural heritage of the Philippines and a testament to the extraordinary diversity of life found within the world’s tropical forests.

This remarkable lot features the magnificent Papilio rumanzovia, a striking swallowtail butterfly native to the tropical forests of the Philippines.
