Siproeta stelenes, commonly known as the Malachite Butterfly, is one of the most recognisable butterflies of the Neotropical region. Native to the tropical forests of Peru and much of Central and South America, this species is celebrated for its striking black wings crossed by brilliant green bands reminiscent of polished malachite stone. The bold colouration and distinctive wing shape make it instantly recognisable among tropical butterflies. As an active and adaptable species, Siproeta stelenes plays an important role within rainforest ecosystems, where it contributes to pollination and serves as part of complex ecological food webs.

Rarity and Value: The value of Siproeta stelenes lies in its remarkable natural colouration and its status as one of the most iconic butterflies of the American tropics. Specimens displaying complete wing integrity, vivid green markings, and well-preserved scales are highly sought after by collectors and natural history enthusiasts. The butterfly’s striking appearance makes it an outstanding representative of tropical biodiversity, while its intricate wing patterns demonstrate the extraordinary evolutionary adaptations developed by rainforest insects over millions of years.

Discovery: Siproeta stelenes belongs to the family Nymphalidae and inhabits forest edges, clearings, riverbanks, and tropical gardens throughout its range. Adults are frequently observed feeding on fruit, nectar, and mineral-rich moisture sources. The vivid green markings serve both as camouflage among foliage and as visual signaling within its environment. The species is known for its strong flight and territorial behaviour, often patrolling sunny openings within the forest. Scientific study of Siproeta stelenes contributes valuable knowledge regarding butterfly ecology, colouration, adaptation, and tropical ecosystem dynamics.

Human Touch: Following ethical sourcing, the butterfly was carefully preserved and professionally mounted to maintain the integrity of its delicate wing structure, vivid colouration, and intricate patterns. Expert framing protects the specimen while showcasing its impressive symmetry and natural beauty. The presentation transforms an extraordinary biological specimen into a refined display piece of both scientific and artistic significance. This framed Siproeta stelenes serves as a celebration of Peru’s rich biodiversity and a lasting reminder of the remarkable beauty found within the tropical rainforests of South America.

Siproeta stelenes, commonly known as the Malachite Butterfly, is one of the most recognisable butterflies of the Neotropical region.
