Colotis auxo, commonly known as the Crimson Tip, is a graceful butterfly native to the savannas, dry woodlands, and open landscapes of South Africa. Belonging to the family Pieridae, this species is admired for its elegant colouration and remarkable adaptation to warm, seasonally arid environments. The female exhibits a distinctive combination of creamy-white wings accented by vivid orange forewing tips and contrasting dark marginal markings. These colouration patterns serve important roles in species recognition and visual communication while contributing to the butterfly’s striking appearance. Colotis auxo represents one of the most recognizable members of the African Orange Tip group and is an excellent example of the rich butterfly diversity found throughout southern Africa.

Rarity and Value: The value of Colotis auxo lies in its refined colouration, ecological significance, and characteristic wing pattern. Specimens displaying complete wing integrity, vibrant orange markings, and well-preserved scales are highly desirable for natural history collections and decorative displays. Female specimens are particularly appreciated for their subtle contrast between pale wing surfaces and vivid orange apical colouration. Well-preserved examples provide valuable insight into the diversity and evolutionary adaptations of butterflies inhabiting Africa’s open habitats and seasonal ecosystems.

Discovery: Colotis auxo belongs to the family Pieridae, a group renowned for active flight and strong ecological associations with flowering plants. Adults are commonly observed visiting blossoms in sunny habitats where they feed on nectar and contribute to pollination networks. The species relies upon specific host plants for larval development and has adapted successfully to environments characterised by seasonal fluctuations in rainfall and vegetation. Scientific studies of Colotis auxo contribute valuable knowledge regarding butterfly ecology, habitat specialisation, pollination biology, and adaptation to arid and semi-arid ecosystems.

Human Touch: Following ethical sourcing, the butterfly was carefully preserved and displayed upon a natural dried bloom within a glass cloche. The delicate botanical arrangement complements the soft cream colouration and vivid orange wing tips, creating a refined composition inspired by its native African environment. Expert preparation preserves the wing structure, intricate scales, and natural colouration while protecting the specimen from environmental damage. The glass cloche transforms this elegant butterfly into a timeless work of natural art, allowing detailed appreciation of one of South Africa’s most distinctive species. This preserved Colotis auxo celebrates the remarkable biodiversity of southern Africa and captures a beautiful example of nature’s evolutionary refinement.

Colotis auxo, commonly known as the Crimson Tip, is a graceful butterfly native to the savannas, dry woodlands, and open landscapes of South Africa.
