Colotis euippe, commonly known as the African Orange Tip, is a striking butterfly native to the savannas, grasslands, and open woodland habitats of South Africa and much of sub-Saharan Africa. Belonging to the family Pieridae, this species is celebrated for the vivid orange colouration found on the forewings, which contrasts beautifully with the bright white wing surface. These bold markings serve as important visual signals during courtship and species recognition while also contributing to the butterfly’s unmistakable appearance in flight. Adapted to warm and seasonally dry environments, Colotis euippe is an excellent representative of the rich butterfly diversity found across Africa’s sunlit landscapes.

Rarity and Value: The value of Colotis euippe lies in its brilliant colouration and its importance as a characteristic species of African ecosystems. Specimens displaying complete wing integrity, vibrant orange markings, and well-preserved scales are highly desirable for natural history collections and decorative displays. The striking contrast between the orange wing tips and white background makes this species one of the most recognizable members of the Pieridae family. Well-preserved examples provide valuable insight into the diversity and evolutionary adaptations of butterflies inhabiting Africa’s open environments.

Discovery: Colotis euippe belongs to the family Pieridae, a group known for its active flight and close ecological association with flowering plants. Adults are frequently observed visiting blossoms in search of nectar and moving rapidly across open habitats in sunny conditions. The species is closely associated with specific host plants that support larval development and influence its distribution. Scientific studies of Colotis euippe contribute valuable knowledge regarding butterfly ecology, pollination biology, adaptation to seasonal environments, and the biodiversity of African ecosystems.

Human Touch: Following ethical sourcing, the butterfly was carefully preserved and displayed upon a natural dandelion within a glass cloche, creating a refined presentation that emphasises both the beauty of the specimen and the delicacy of its natural setting. Expert preparation preserves the integrity of the wing structure, vivid colouration, and intricate patterns while protecting the butterfly from environmental damage. The glass cloche provides a timeless display that allows detailed appreciation of this elegant African species. This preserved Colotis euippe serves as both a scientific treasure and a celebration of South Africa’s remarkable biodiversity, capturing a vivid example of nature’s evolutionary artistry.

Colotis euippe, commonly known as the African Orange Tip, is a striking butterfly native to the savannas, grasslands, and open woodland habitats of South Africa and much of sub-Saharan Africa.
