Colotis regina, commonly known as the Queen Purple Tip, is an elegant butterfly native to the savannas and open woodland habitats of southern Africa. Belonging to the family Pieridae, this species is distinguished by its striking white wings accented with vivid violet-purple apical markings on the forewings. The delicate contrast between the pale wing surface and the brilliant purple colouration creates one of the most refined and recognizable appearances among African butterflies. Adapted to warm and seasonally dry environments, Colotis regina represents the remarkable diversity of the African Orange Tip butterflies and serves as an important component of regional pollinator communities.

Rarity and Value: The value of Colotis regina lies in its graceful colouration, delicate morphology, and ecological specialisation. Specimens displaying complete wing integrity, intense purple markings, and well-preserved scales are highly sought after by collectors, naturalists, and entomologists. The vivid violet colouration visible on the forewing tips is particularly desirable, creating a striking contrast against the otherwise pristine white wings. Well-preserved examples provide important insight into the biodiversity and evolutionary adaptations of butterflies inhabiting the grasslands and woodland ecosystems of southern Africa.

Discovery: Colotis regina belongs to the family Pieridae, a group known for strong flight capabilities and close associations with flowering plants. Adults are commonly observed in sunny open habitats where they feed on nectar and contribute to pollination networks. The species relies upon specific host plants for larval development and has adapted successfully to environments characterised by seasonal rainfall patterns and changing vegetation. Scientific research on Colotis regina contributes valuable knowledge regarding butterfly ecology, habitat specialisation, pollination biology, and adaptation to African savanna ecosystems.

Human Touch: Following ethical sourcing, the butterfly was carefully preserved and displayed upon a natural dried bloom within a glass cloche. The elegant botanical arrangement enhances the purity of the white wings and the brilliance of the purple markings, creating a refined composition inspired by its native environment. Expert preparation preserves the delicate wing structure, intricate scales, and natural colouration while protecting the specimen from environmental damage. The glass cloche transforms this graceful butterfly into a timeless work of natural art, allowing detailed appreciation of one of southern Africa’s most beautiful species. This preserved Colotis regina celebrates the extraordinary biodiversity of the South African Republic and preserves a remarkable example of nature’s elegance and evolutionary refinement.

Colotis regina, commonly known as the Queen Purple Tip, is an elegant butterfly native to the savannas and open woodland habitats of southern Africa.
