Polybothris sumptuosa is a remarkable jewel beetle of the family Buprestidae endemic to Madagascar, one of the world’s most biologically distinctive biodiversity hotspots. The species is distinguished by its brilliant metallic exoskeleton displaying vivid shades of emerald green, bronze, gold, and crimson. These colours are produced by microscopic multilayer structures within the cuticle that generate structural colouration through the interference of light rather than pigments. The combination of its endemic distribution, exceptional iridescence, and highly specialised morphology makes Polybothris sumptuosa one of the most striking representatives of the Malagasy jewel beetle fauna.

This species inhabits Madagascar’s tropical forests, where larvae develop beneath the bark of weakened or recently dead trees. As wood-boring insects, they contribute to the decomposition of woody material and the recycling of nutrients within forest ecosystems. Adults are diurnal and frequently observed on sunlit trunks, branches, and foliage, where their metallic colouration may function in camouflage among reflective vegetation as well as in species recognition. Like other members of Buprestidae, Polybothris sumptuosa possesses a robust, streamlined body, well-developed compound eyes, and powerful flight muscles that enable efficient movement through densely vegetated habitats.

The specimen has been professionally preserved to maintain the natural morphology of the exoskeleton, the finely sculptured elytra, and the delicate anatomical structures characteristic of the species. Particular attention is given to preserving the microscopic surface architecture responsible for its iridescent structural colouration, allowing its natural optical properties to remain visible under varying angles of illumination. As an endemic representative of Madagascar’s unique insect fauna, Polybothris sumptuosa illustrates the remarkable evolutionary diversification of jewel beetles and highlights the exceptional biological richness of one of the world’s most important centres of endemism.

Rarity and Value Polybothris sumptuosa is a remarkable jewel beetle of the family Buprestidae endemic to Madagascar, one of the world’s most biologically distinctive biodiversity hotspots.
