Description: Diaethria clymena is a remarkable Neotropical butterfly of the family Nymphalidae, widely recognised for the distinctive markings on the underside of its hindwings. These dark linear patterns often resemble numerals and have led members of the genus Diaethria to be commonly known as “eighty-eight” butterflies. Native to tropical Central and South America, including Peru, the species displays contrasting red, black, white, and bluish colouration. Its elaborate patterns are created by microscopic pigmented wing scales arranged in highly organised formations. The wings provide both efficient flight and important visual signals involved in recognition and predator avoidance.

Rarity and Value: The biological significance of Diaethria clymena lies in its extraordinary wing-pattern organisation and distinctive ventral markings. These naturally occurring patterns provide an exceptional example of symmetry and developmental organisation in Lepidoptera. Well-preserved specimens with clearly visible hindwing markings, intact scales, and complete wing margins are especially valuable for entomological collections. The species is also important for studies of pattern formation, visual signalling, tropical butterfly diversity, and the evolutionary development of complex wing colouration.

Discovery: Diaethria clymena inhabits humid tropical forests, forest edges, and clearings throughout parts of the Neotropical region. Adults are agile flyers and may be observed resting on foliage or moving rapidly through sunlit areas. Larvae develop on selected host plants and pass through several growth stages before forming a chrysalis. The adult emerges after complete metamorphosis with fully developed wings covered in thousands of microscopic scales. Scientific studies of Diaethria contribute to understanding wing-pattern genetics, insect development, and ecological diversification in tropical forests.

Human Touch: Following ethical sourcing, the butterfly was carefully preserved and displayed upon a natural dandelion within a glass cloche. The floral composition provides a subtle background that emphasises the remarkable wing markings and contrasting colouration of the specimen. Expert preparation preserves the fragile scales and essential anatomical features while allowing detailed observation of the butterfly’s distinctive morphology. Protected within the glass cloche, this Peruvian specimen represents an exceptional example of the complex biological patterning found among Neotropical butterflies.
