This exceptional lot features an authentic fossil tooth from Otodus obliquus, a giant mackerel shark that reigned in the Eocene seas over 54 million years ago. Measuring 8 cm in length, this tooth is a tangible connection to a long-extinct predator, a distant ancestor of the iconic Megalodon and modern Great White sharks. Its sharp triangular crown and fossilised hues, ranging from earthy browns to muted greys, tell the story of its marine origins in the phosphate-rich deposits near Khouribga, Morocco.

The tooth’s naturally preserved serrations and cusp detail highlight the incredible efficiency of its design, once used to tear through large prey. Despite minor imperfections like worn edges or missing cusps, which are common due to mining conditions, this fossil captures the power and beauty of one of Earth’s ancient apex predators.

Rarity and Value: While smaller Otodus teeth are often found in the phosphate mines of Morocco, specimens of this size are rare due to damage from mining equipment and the sheer difficulty of uncovering intact pieces. Its size and preservation make this tooth a prized collectible, appealing to both palaeontology enthusiasts and those who appreciate the artistry of natural history.

Discovery: Excavated from the Eocene phosphate beds near Khouribga, this tooth is a relic of an ancient ocean ecosystem. These deposits are among the world’s richest fossil beds, but extracting high-quality specimens is a meticulous process, as teeth are often exposed to heavy equipment during mining operations. This specimen has been carefully selected to preserve its authentic form, offering a glimpse into the distant marine world.

Human Touch: Presented in its natural state, this Otodus tooth reflects the expertise required to recover and preserve fossil material from challenging conditions. Its size and form, though shaped by time, remain a testament to the enduring strength of these prehistoric predators. Whether displayed as a centrepiece or studied as part of a fossil collection, this tooth embodies the enduring fascination with the giants of ancient seas.
