Rarity and Collectible Value

This limited-edition autographed print, We Are the Jocular Clan (3) (2018), represents a distinctive example of contemporary Japanese art by Takashi Murakami, one of the most internationally recognised artists of his generation. Created in an edition of 300 impressions, the artwork is individually numbered 240/300 and bears the artist’s handwritten signature. Its limited production, identifiable edition number, and association with Murakami’s celebrated artistic language contribute to its significance within contemporary print collecting.

Murakami is internationally renowned for developing the Superflat aesthetic, a visual and conceptual approach that brings together traditional Japanese artistic conventions, contemporary anime, manga, consumer culture, and the language of global Pop Art. His signature imagery, characterised by vibrant colours, expressive characters, and seemingly playful compositions, has become instantly recognisable across museums, galleries, and international art collections.

The print occupies a distinctive position within Murakami’s artistic production, combining an accessible visual language with the technical precision of limited-edition printmaking. As a signed and numbered work by an internationally established contemporary artist, it appeals to collectors interested in Japanese contemporary art, Pop Art, and the relationship between fine art and popular culture.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Created in Japan in 2018, We Are the Jocular Clan (3) belongs to the artistic universe developed by Takashi Murakami, whose work explores the intersections of historical Japanese aesthetics, contemporary visual culture, and the global circulation of images. Born in Tokyo in 1962, Murakami studied traditional Japanese painting, known as Nihonga, at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he earned a doctoral degree in 1993.

His academic background provided an important foundation for the development of Superflat, a concept formally introduced around 2000. This artistic philosophy examines the flattened pictorial space found in traditional Japanese painting and contemporary animation while also exploring the cultural relationship between fine art, commercial imagery, and mass-produced objects.

Murakami’s international career includes major museum exhibitions and collaborations with prominent fashion houses and musicians. His artistic production encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, animation, and printmaking, frequently featuring recurring characters whose exaggerated expressions and colourful appearances conceal more complex cultural and psychological references.

The present print was produced within this artistic context and demonstrates Murakami’s ability to translate his elaborate visual vocabulary into a carefully controlled graphic composition. Its playful subject matter and bold chromatic contrasts reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of contemporary Japanese identity, consumer culture, and the visual mechanisms of modern popular entertainment.

Image and Presentation

We Are the Jocular Clan (3) features a striking circular composition dominated by a large, fantastical character rendered in Murakami’s unmistakable Superflat style. The image presents a pale-pink face populated by multiple asymmetrically arranged eyes, each surrounded by expressive graphic outlines and contrasting areas of colour. The eyes vary in scale and orientation, creating a playful yet unsettling sense of movement across the flattened surface.

Sweeping red and deep-blue curved forms introduce additional visual rhythm, while smaller facial elements and spiraling motifs reinforce the composition’s surreal character. At the centre of the lower section, an enormous open mouth reveals a dramatic arrangement of sharply pointed geometric teeth and rainbow-coloured forms. Brilliant yellow, red, turquoise, blue, green, and purple shapes radiate from within the mouth, creating an energetic contrast with the softer pink background.

The composition reflects Murakami’s characteristic combination of apparent innocence and psychological ambiguity. Although the figure initially resembles a playful animated character, its exaggerated anatomy and dramatic expression introduce a more complex visual tension. The artwork invites the viewer to move between humour, fascination, and a subtle sense of unease.

Executed as a colour offset lithograph on paper with glossy varnish details, the print emphasises saturated pigments, crisp contours, and the smooth pictorial surfaces associated with the Superflat movement. The circular format, approximately 49.8 cm in diameter, reinforces the concentrated energy of the composition and distinguishes the work from conventional rectangular prints.

The artwork’s vivid palette and immediately recognisable imagery make it particularly suitable for contemporary residential interiors, private art collections, creative spaces, and galleries dedicated to modern Japanese visual culture.

Human Touch

The personal significance of this collectible lies in Takashi Murakami’s handwritten signature and the individual edition number 240/300, which identify the print as a specific impression within a limited artistic production. Although Murakami frequently works with sophisticated printing techniques and collaborative production processes, the presence of his signature introduces a direct connection between the artist and the completed artwork.

Murakami’s creative approach is deeply informed by his lifelong fascination with Japanese animation, popular characters, and the relationship between childhood imagination and adult cultural experience. His artistic world frequently combines cheerful visual elements with more complex references to identity, historical memory, commercialisation, and the psychological dimensions of contemporary society.

In We Are the Jocular Clan (3), these ideas emerge through the expressive face, the playful arrangement of multiple eyes, and the unexpected intensity of the open mouth. The character appears simultaneously humorous, energetic, and mysterious, encouraging viewers to discover new details within its densely arranged visual structure.

Beyond its decorative appeal, the artwork reflects Murakami’s distinctive philosophy of dissolving conventional boundaries between high art and popular imagery. The signed impression preserves an individual connection to this artistic vision, representing a carefully produced example of the artist’s ability to transform familiar elements of contemporary visual culture into a recognisable language of fine art.

For collectors, the piece offers an opportunity to engage with one of the defining artistic movements of contemporary Japan through an original signed and numbered edition by its leading representative.
