This fossil Mosasaur tooth originates from the celebrated Kem Kem fossil deposits of Morocco, one of North Africa’s most important Cretaceous fossil regions. Mosasaurs were powerful aquatic reptiles related to modern lizards and snakes, adapted to life in water and equipped with robust jaws and recurved teeth for capturing prey. Fossil remains from the Kem Kem region preserve an extraordinary record of the diverse vertebrate ecosystems that existed in northern Africa during the mid-Cretaceous, approximately 93–112 million years ago.

Rarity and Value

Fossil reptile teeth are particularly valued because they provide a direct record of feeding adaptation and predator ecology. Discovery

The Kem Kem fossil beds extend across southeastern Morocco and preserve sediments deposited during the Albian–Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous Period. These deposits have produced remains of an exceptionally diverse fauna, including aquatic reptiles, dinosaurs, crocodile-line reptiles, turtles, fishes, pterosaurs, and other vertebrates. The abundance of isolated teeth in these sediments provides paleontologists with valuable evidence for reconstructing the complex predator communities and aquatic environments that existed in North Africa more than 90 million years ago.

Following careful recovery and preparation, the fossil tooth has been preserved as an individual natural-history specimen, allowing its form, enamel surface, and predatory adaptation to be examined at close range.
