Camposternus species belong to the family Elateridae, commonly known as click beetles, and are among the most visually remarkable beetles of Southeast Asia. Their brilliant metallic green, gold, copper, and crimson coloration is produced by microscopic multilayer structures within the cuticle that create structural coloration through light interference rather than pigmentation. Members of this genus possess the characteristic clicking mechanism of Elateridae, formed by a specialized prosternal spine and mesosternal groove, allowing the beetle to propel itself into the air when overturned or threatened. These adaptations, combined with their striking iridescence, make Camposternus one of the most distinctive genera within the family.

Discovery and Acquisition

Native to the tropical forests of Laos, Camposternus beetles inhabit humid woodland ecosystems where larvae develop within decaying wood and organic substrates. As saproxylic organisms, the larvae contribute to the decomposition of plant material and nutrient cycling, supporting the ecological functioning of forest habitats. Adults are primarily active during the warm rainy season and are frequently found on tree trunks, foliage, and flowering vegetation. Their well-developed compound eyes, sensitive antennae, and strong flight capability enable efficient navigation through densely vegetated tropical environments.

The specimen has been professionally preserved to maintain the natural morphology of the exoskeleton, appendages, and fine structural details responsible for its characteristic metallic appearance.
