The Chersina angulata, commonly known as the Angulate or Bowsprit Tortoise, is a distinctive and highly localized species native to the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Its elegant shell, ranging from warm golden to deep amber-brown tones, features sharply defined growth rings and a pronounced keel that gives it its “angulate” name. Because it is the only species within its genus, and due to habitat pressure across its native range, it holds exceptional biological and collector’s value.

Discovery and Origin

This tortoise inhabits the coastal scrublands and renosterveld of South Africa and Namibia, where it evolved remarkable adaptations for survival in dry climates — from seasonal aestivation during extreme heat to dietary selectivity on native succulents. First described in 1825 by Schweigger, Chersina angulata has long attracted naturalists for its morphological beauty and unique taxonomic position as a monotypic genus within the family Testudinidae.
