Rarity and Value

This remarkable Chinese travelling pillow chest represents an ingenious combination of portable furniture and secure personal storage. Its compact proportions, curved upper surface, lockable construction and carrying fittings reflect a form specifically adapted to life on the move.

The survival of the richly decorated interior, original-style metal fittings, auspicious exterior inscriptions and pictorial lacquer decoration gives the chest particular decorative and historical interest. Dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880–1910, it preserves the character of a highly personal object created for both practicality and refinement.

Origin and Historical Context

Portable pillow chests were used in China during journeys and periods of temporary residence. The secure interior provided a convenient place for keeping money, jewellery, documents and other personal valuables, while the gently curved closed lid allowed the chest to serve as a firm headrest or armrest during travel and rest.

This dual-purpose construction was especially practical because the owner could keep valuable possessions physically close while sleeping. The form belongs to a broader Chinese tradition of compact travelling furniture in which storage, portability and personal comfort were combined within a single object.

This example dates to the late Qing dynasty, around the turn of the 20th century.

Craftsmanship and Decoration

The chest is constructed from wood finished with deep red-brown lacquer and fitted with brass or copper-alloy hardware, including a central locking plate and side carrying handles. Its slightly curved upper surface is decorated with a traditional composition of birds and flowering branches.

Prominently displayed on the exterior are repeated characters:

福 — Fú

meaning “fortune,” “blessing,” “happiness” or “good luck.” The character is one of the most recognizable auspicious symbols in Chinese decorative arts.

The interior is extensively lined with printed Chinese text and small illustrated scenes. A clearly identifiable heading reads:

百家姓 — Bǎijiāxìng — “The Hundred Family Surnames.”

The Hundred Family Surnames is one of the traditional Chinese educational texts used for teaching characters and family names. Rows of individual surnames are accompanied here by miniature narrative and figural illustrations, creating an unusually elaborate interior surface.

The contrast between the dark lacquered exterior and the warm printed interior gives the chest a particularly rich visual character.

Human Touch

Unlike a conventional storage chest, this object was designed to remain close to its owner throughout a journey. Once personal possessions had been secured inside, the chest itself became part of the traveller’s immediate surroundings — supporting the head or arm during moments of rest.

The repeated characters introduced an additional personal dimension, surrounding the traveller with a traditional wish for happiness and good fortune. Inside, the familiar characters and illustrations of the Hundred Family Surnames connected an everyday object with education, family identity and Chinese literary culture.

The result is an intimate piece of travelling history: an object created not simply to transport possessions, but to safeguard them while accompanying its owner through daily life and long journeys.
