Discovery and Collection

The specimens originate from shallow Mediterranean coastal habitats, where rocky reefs, seagrass meadows, and sandy seabeds support exceptionally rich benthic communities. Sea stars function as important predators that regulate populations of mollusks and other invertebrates, while sea urchins play a key ecological role by grazing on algae and helping maintain the ecological balance of coastal ecosystems. Sand dollars represent highly specialized echinoids adapted for life within soft sediments, using numerous tube feet and ciliated surfaces for locomotion and feeding. The accompanying gastropod shells were secreted throughout the animals’ lives by the mantle, producing durable calcium carbonate structures that protect soft tissues while recording successive stages of growth.
