Rarity and Value

This distinctive sculpture portrays a stylized Woolly Mammoth, masterfully carved from genuine fossilized mammoth ivory estimated to be approximately 400,000 years old. Combining minimalist artistic expression with one of the rarest natural materials available to contemporary craftsmen, the piece serves as both a work of art and a tangible relic of the Ice Age.

The sculptor has intentionally reduced the mammoth’s form to its essential features, emphasizing the powerful silhouette, curved back, prominent tusks, and characteristic shaggy coat. The warm brown and honey-colored patina visible throughout the ivory developed naturally during hundreds of thousands of years of burial within mineral-rich sediments, making each sculpture completely unique. Such pieces are highly desirable among collectors of prehistoric materials, natural history art, and fossil ivory carvings.

Discovery

The material used in this sculpture originates from the Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), one of the most iconic animals of the Pleistocene Epoch. Mammoths evolved approximately 400,000 years ago and roamed the vast mammoth-steppe ecosystem that stretched across Europe, northern Asia, and North America.

These remarkable animals were superbly adapted to cold environments. They possessed a dense undercoat covered by long guard hairs, a thick insulating fat layer, relatively small ears that minimized heat loss, and immense curved tusks that could exceed four meters in length. Adult males often reached heights of up to four meters and weighed between six and eight tonnes.

Mammoths were specialized grazers whose massive molars contained tightly packed enamel plates designed to grind tough grasses and tundra vegetation. Their tusks were used for foraging beneath snow, defense, social interaction, and environmental modification. Although most mammoth populations disappeared around 10,000 years ago, isolated groups survived on Arctic islands until approximately 4,000 years ago.

After their extinction, countless tusks became naturally preserved in frozen permafrost and ancient sediments, where mineralization gradually transformed them into remarkable fossil material. The coloration visible in this sculpture reflects centuries of interaction with minerals and geological conditions, providing a direct connection to the prehistoric world.

Craftsmanship

The sculpture has been carefully hand-carved from a section of fossil mammoth ivory selected specifically for its dramatic natural coloration. Rather than pursuing strict anatomical realism, the artist embraced a stylized and almost primordial interpretation of the mammoth, creating a form that evokes prehistoric cave art and early human representations of Ice Age animals.

Particular attention has been given to the elegant contrast between the dark fossilized body and the lighter ivory tusks. The simplified facial features, flowing contours, and textured coat create a strong visual identity while preserving the natural beauty of the material itself.

The figure is mounted upon a natural fossilized base whose rugged surface recalls the frozen landscapes and ancient environments once inhabited by mammoths. Together, the sculpture and base form a cohesive composition that celebrates both the animal and the extraordinary material from which it is made.

Preservation

The fossil mammoth ivory remains in excellent condition, displaying natural mineral coloration, authentic fossil structure, and a finely polished surface. Variations in tone, subtle inclusions, and ancient textural features are inherent characteristics of genuine fossil ivory and contribute to the uniqueness of the piece.

As both a decorative artwork and a genuine fragment of Ice Age history, this sculpture offers a rare opportunity to own material that originated hundreds of thousands of years ago. It stands as a tribute to one of Earth’s most celebrated prehistoric animals and to the enduring fascination that mammoths continue to inspire in science, art, and collecting.
