David Prowse – Star Wars Photograph with Inscription and Autograph

Rarity and Collectible Value

This autographed Star Wars photograph is a collectible piece of cinema memorabilia associated with David Prowse, the actor who provided the physical performance of Darth Vader throughout the original Star Wars trilogy. The black-and-white promotional image depicts Darth Vader in costume and carries both Prowse’s handwritten signature and the inscription “May the Force be with you,” one of the most recognizable phrases connected with the Star Wars universe.

The combination of character imagery, personal autograph and handwritten dedication gives the photograph particular appeal to collectors of science-fiction and film memorabilia. Prowse’s contribution was fundamental to the visual identity of Darth Vader: at 6 ft 6 in tall and with a background in bodybuilding and weightlifting, his stature and controlled physical movements created the imposing screen presence that became inseparable from the character. Lucasfilm has specifically credited Prowse with giving Vader the physicality essential to his impact on screen.

Origin and Historical Context

David Prowse portrayed the physical form of Darth Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Although Vader’s voice was performed separately, it was Prowse who occupied the costume and established much of the character’s bodily presence: the upright posture, deliberate movement and commanding silhouette that made Vader instantly recognizable.

The photograph itself relates to the first Star Wars film, released by 20th Century-Fox in 1977, as indicated by the printed caption along its lower border. That film introduced Darth Vader to audiences and established him as one of the central figures of the saga. The phrase written by Prowse, “May the Force be with you,” was already part of the original film and subsequently became one of the franchise’s defining expressions, eventually entering popular culture far beyond the films themselves.

Image, Inscription and Presentation

The photograph measures 29.5 × 20.7 cm and presents Darth Vader in a strong frontal composition, with the dark helmet, chest control panel and cape dominating the right half of the image. The left side provides a light area that allows the handwritten inscription and signature to remain highly visible.

Across the upper left, Prowse has written “May the Force be with you,” followed by a prominent autograph beneath. The original printed caption at the bottom identifies the image as a Star Wars promotional still and includes a description of Darth Vader’s role within the Galactic Empire. The monochrome photography, handwritten black inscription and iconic costume together create a visually direct piece of memorabilia closely connected with the earliest era of the franchise.

Human Touch

Prowse’s career extended considerably beyond Darth Vader. Before entering film, he competed successfully as a weightlifter, winning the British heavyweight weightlifting championship for three consecutive years from 1962 to 1964. His unusual combination of physical strength and screen presence later led to roles in films including A Clockwork Orange and several Hammer productions.

His knowledge of physical conditioning also brought him behind the camera. Prowse personally trained Christopher Reeve in preparation for Superman, helping the actor develop the physique required for the 1978 film. This background makes his contribution to Darth Vader especially significant: the character’s intimidating presence was not created by costume alone, but by an experienced athlete who understood posture, controlled movement and physical performance. The handwritten dedication on this photograph adds a personal connection to the man inside one of cinema’s most famous costumes.
