Rarity and Historical Value
This handwritten note bearing the name of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin) is dated Petrograd, November 1, 1917, placing it within an exceptionally important period in Russian and twentieth-century history. Lenin was the principal leader of the Bolshevik movement and, following the October Revolution, became the first head of the new Soviet government.
Autograph material connected with Lenin is of particular documentary interest because it provides a direct physical link to one of the central political figures of the revolutionary period. The surviving note is written in brown ink on light-colored paper and includes both the family name Ulyanov and the revolutionary name Lenin, followed by the place and date. Its historical significance is strengthened by the precise timing: November 1, 1917 in the Gregorian calendar corresponded to October 19 under the Julian calendar then used in Russia, only days before the Bolshevik seizure of power in Petrograd.
Origin and Historical Context
The date recorded on the note coincides with a period of intense disagreement within the Bolshevik leadership over the proposed armed uprising. Lenin’s Letter to Comrades, written on October 17 (30), 1917, was published in the Bolshevik newspaper Rabochy Put in three consecutive issues on November 1, 2 and 3. In it, Lenin argued against those who considered an immediate uprising premature and defended the necessity of decisive action.
At the same time, Lev Kamenev and Grigory Zinoviev publicly expressed opposition to plans for an armed insurrection. Lenin responded with extraordinary severity. On October 19 / November 1, he wrote his Letter to the Central Committee of the R.S.D.L.P.(B.), condemning their disclosure of the party’s internal decision and demanding disciplinary action. The date appearing on this handwritten note therefore situates the object within the immediate political environment preceding the October Revolution.
Document and Presentation
The central document is a small rectangular sheet with a handwritten inscription executed in flowing cursive. The brown ink remains clearly visible against the pale paper, and the writing displays the rapid, connected strokes characteristic of personal correspondence and inscriptions from the period. The text occupies only a limited section of the sheet, giving the handwriting itself considerable visual presence.
In its current presentation, the note is mounted at the center of a large framed composition measuring 68.6 × 2.7 × 37.7 cm. Two black-and-white portraits of Lenin flank the document: one presents him in a formal seated portrait, while the other shows him working at a desk. A deep green mount, narrow metallic borders and a dark outer frame create a restrained museum-style presentation. A name plaque below the document identifies Vladimir Lenin, visually uniting the autograph with the historical photographs.
Human Touch
The significance of this object lies not only in Lenin’s political role but also in the physical immediacy of handwriting. Major historical events are usually encountered through printed texts, official documents and later interpretation; a handwritten name, place and date reduce that scale to the movement of an individual hand across paper.
The inscription is especially evocative because its date belongs to a moment when Lenin was writing repeatedly to party colleagues, arguing over the timing and organization of an armed uprising. His surviving correspondence from these days shows a leader intensely engaged in tactical disputes and pressing for immediate action. Presented between two period portraits, the note becomes both an autograph artifact and a compact documentary witness to one of the decisive weeks of the Russian Revolution.
