Rarity and Historical Value

This signed bank check is a personal financial document issued by J. Paul Getty, the American oil industrialist, businessman and art collector whose fortune and cultural legacy became internationally significant during the twentieth century. Dated April 20, 1928, check No. 1524 was drawn through Security Trust & Savings Bank in Los Angeles for the amount of $16.35 and bears Getty’s handwritten signature in blue ink at the lower right.

Unlike later commemorative material, the check is an original transactional document created during Getty’s active business career. Its collectible interest lies in this everyday function: it preserves his name, business identity, banking relationship and autograph within a document that was intended to circulate through the financial system rather than to serve as memorabilia. Getty later became one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen; in 1957, Fortune named him the richest man in the world.

Origin and Historical Context

Jean Paul Getty was born in 1892 and entered the family oil business as a young man. After working in the Oklahoma oil fields, he made his first million dollars while still in his twenties and subsequently expanded his interests in petroleum and other industries. Getty’s later business empire grew internationally, and his oil operations became the foundation of the extraordinary fortune for which he became famous.

The check dates from 1928, several years before Getty assumed greater control of the family business following his father’s death in 1930. It therefore belongs to an earlier stage of his career, when he was already an established oil businessman but decades away from the international prominence he achieved after World War II.

Its date also places the document within the final phase of the economic expansion popularly known as the Roaring Twenties. However, the principal historical importance of the object is its direct connection with Getty’s own business activity rather than any specific relationship to stock-market speculation.

Document and Presentation

The check is printed on warm beige bank paper and carries the heading “J. Paul Getty — Oil Producer” at the upper left, directly identifying Getty with the industry on which his fortune was built. The Security Trust & Savings Bank name appears prominently across the upper portion of the document, together with the check number and the Los Angeles location.

The payment amount of $16.35 appears in both numerical and written form, while the payee information occupies the central portion. Getty’s signature is placed in the lower right and executed in flowing blue ink beneath his printed name. Perforations, bank markings and cancellation details visible on the document preserve evidence of its original practical use.

In the current presentation, the check is mounted beside a black-and-white portrait of Getty within a dark wood frame measuring 59 × 4 × 36 cm. A deep green background and narrow gold borders give the composition a restrained archival character, while a small plaque below identifies the document as personally signed by Paul Getty.

Human Touch

The most compelling aspect of the check is the contrast between the modest value of the transaction and the later scale of Getty’s fortune. A payment of $16.35 is an ordinary business expense, yet the signature belongs to a man who would eventually become synonymous with extraordinary wealth.

Getty’s legacy also extended far beyond petroleum. He began collecting art in the 1930s, established the J. Paul Getty Museum Trust in 1953 and opened his first museum to the public the following year. After his death in 1976, his bequest transformed the institution into what became the J. Paul Getty Trust, one of the world’s major cultural and philanthropic organizations devoted to the visual arts.

The handwritten signature on this small commercial document therefore links two very different sides of Getty’s life: the businessman carrying out routine financial transactions and the future collector and philanthropist whose name would become permanently associated with one of the world’s leading art institutions.
