The wolf’s fur is thick, fluffy, quite long, up to 8 cm, and consists of guard hair and undercoat. Black at the tips, coarse guard hairs repel water and dirt, preventing the undercoat from getting wet. The undercoat consists of waterproof down, which perfectly retains heat. Due to the guard pile being impregnated with fat, wolf fur has water-repellent properties, so snow does not melt on it. The polar wolf’s hair is lush, shiny, silky, and bluish-gray. Long hair at the nape, ridge, and rump can have several color zones, gradually moving from black and pure white to light, dark brown, and cream. Durable and beautiful in its own way, winter wolf fur has long been classified as particularly warm fur. It should be noted the increased strength of the hairline, which is constantly exposed to external mechanical influences and the harsh conditions of the wolf’s existence. The collection Artefactum Gallery contains a rare example of taxidermy work of dark brown fur, with well-preserved skin.
