Rarity and Value
World Map (YRM) is a unique, one-of-one textile work created within the Yoomoota universe in collaboration with Jaipur Rugs. Unlike a conventional decorative carpet, the piece functions as a large-scale narrative map: the entire surface is conceived as an interconnected system of symbolic territories, pathways and biomorphic forms. Its singular edition, substantial 200 × 300 cm scale and combination of fine-art concept with traditional rug craftsmanship give the work particular significance within the Yoomoota project.
The collaboration with Jaipur Rugs adds an important artisanal dimension. According to Yoomoota, the rug was handcrafted in Jaipur from wool and viscose by artisans working with techniques developed over generations, translating the artist’s imagined universe into a tactile medium.
Origin and Conceptual Context
The rug represents a textile interpretation of the Yoomoota universe, an imaginary world conceived by Taras Yoom as a projection of the human body and mind. The official Yoomoota narrative describes this universe as comprising at least 23 interconnected planets associated with emotions, physical processes, addictions, desires, knowledge, childhood and other aspects of human existence.
This idea is translated visually into a map-like composition. Rather than depicting geographical continents, the rug presents an invented anatomy of existence: colored channels travel across the surface, connecting cellular forms, organic structures, mechanical-looking systems and enigmatic symbols. The official description of the YRM collaboration refers specifically to a surreal landscape of 23 interconnected planets and presents the work as a map to be explored step by step.
Craftsmanship and Decoration
The composition is set against a warm ivory ground framed by a sculptural grey border with rhythmic projections and dark geometric accents. Across the field, finely outlined motifs are linked by red, pink, blue, green and yellow pathways, giving the surface the appearance of a biological diagram, technological circuit and imaginary cartographic chart at once.
The photographed design includes branching vascular forms, segmented tubular structures, circular cell-like bodies, arrow systems, star-shaped elements, a central multicolored organic figure, floral forms and geometric devices. Several motifs appear to reference microscopic anatomy, transport systems or speculative machinery, yet they remain intentionally fantastical rather than strictly scientific.
The combination of wool and viscose allows different textures and degrees of sheen to coexist within the same surface. Raised contours and contrasting pile heights emphasize individual symbols, making the design readable not only visually but also through its tactile relief. This material approach transforms the graphic vocabulary of Yoomoota into a physical landscape that can be experienced through both sight and touch.
Human Touch
What makes World Map especially characteristic of Taras Yoom’s practice is its fusion of scientific curiosity and imaginative storytelling. Before focusing on art, Yoom trained in medicine, and his work continues to incorporate references to biology, natural structures and the organization of the human body. He describes his current artistic language as biomorphic surrealism.
Here, the traditional function of a rug is expanded into that of a conceptual map. The viewer is invited to read its pathways as routes through an invented world, discovering relationships between separate forms and constructing an individual interpretation of how they interact.
Taras Yoom is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, collectible design, furniture, painting and other media. His works have been presented internationally, including at PAD Art + Design, Art Miami, Collectible Fair and other exhibitions, and works from the Yoomoota universe are held in the collections of the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen.
World Map (YRM) ultimately transforms the Yoomoota universe into a monumental textile landscape – part map, part biological diagram and part imagined cosmology — inviting the viewer to travel through an inner world rather than across conventional geography.
