The polar bear’s fur is devoid of pigment color, and the hairs are hollow. Translucent hairs allow only ultraviolet rays to pass through, giving the wool thermal insulation properties. The bear’s fur is shiny and translucent at the same time. Previous research has shown that polar bear fur is particularly good at retaining heat for two reasons. Firstly, the hairs that make up it are hollow, and secondly, the hairs dissipate thermal energy well, instead of releasing it into the surrounding atmosphere.
