Delivery: Sebastes mentella, commonly known as the Deepwater Redfish or Red Perch, is a cold-water marine fish of the family Sebastidae. It inhabits deep regions of the North Atlantic, including waters around Iceland, Greenland, the Norwegian Sea, the Barents Sea, and the northwestern Atlantic. The species is recognized by its vivid red-orange coloration, large eyes, robust body, and prominent spiny dorsal fin. These features reflect its adaptation to deep offshore environments, where reduced light levels and cold, stable temperatures shape the biology of many deep-water fishes. Sebastes mentella is a slow-growing and exceptionally long-lived species, with individuals capable of surviving for many decades.
Rarity and Value: The biological value of Sebastes mentella lies in its remarkable longevity, slow growth, specialized deep-water ecology, and unusual reproductive strategy. Unlike most marine fishes, which release externally fertilized eggs, this species reproduces through internal fertilization, with developing young retained within the female before being released as free-swimming larvae. Its prolonged life cycle and relatively late maturation make populations especially sensitive to environmental change and intensive fishing pressure. Well-preserved specimens retaining the natural coloration, fin structure, body proportions, and characteristic head morphology are valuable for comparative study, education, and natural-history collections.
Discovery: Sebastes mentella is typically associated with deep offshore waters, often occurring at depths of several hundred metres and extending to more than 1,000 metres in some parts of its range. It feeds on krill, amphipods, small fishes, cephalopods, and other marine organisms, forming an important link within North Atlantic food webs. The species may gather in large aggregations and is biologically significant for research into deep-sea adaptation, population structure, reproduction, and longevity. Its large eyes, strong mouth, and streamlined body support survival in cold, dimly lit environments where food resources may be widely dispersed.
Human Touch: Following professional taxidermy processing, the specimen was chemically treated through fumigation and disinfection using boric-acid-based agents and 70% isopropyl alcohol, followed by controlled dehydration. This treatment was carried out to eliminate biological activity, parasites, insects, fungi, and other potential biological hazards. The preserved fish was then incorporated into a naturalistic composition with driftwood, vegetation, stones, and substrate, creating the impression of an underwater habitat. The finished specimen is non-living, insect-free, chemically stabilized, and suitable for long-term storage, transportation, educational presentation, or decorative display under normal indoor conditions.
