Duala (Douala) Buffalo Mask “Nyatti” – Cameroon, 20th Century.

Description:
This striking polychrome buffalo mask, traditionally known as Nyatti or Nyati, belongs to the artistic traditions associated with the Duala peoples of Cameroon. Carved from wood, the composition is dominated by an imposing pair of curved horns that rise above the head and nearly form a complete oval. Beneath them, the elongated and highly stylised face is organised around a strong central ridge and decorated with a carefully balanced geometric pattern in red, ochre, cream and dark brown pigments.

The mask combines an immediately recognisable animal form with a highly abstract decorative language. The broad curving horns identify the creature as a buffalo, while the elongated muzzle, lateral ears and rhythmic painted ornament transform the animal into a powerful ceremonial image. The contrast between the pale upper horns and darker lower sections further emphasises the monumental silhouette of the piece.

Cultural Significance:
Buffalo masks occupied an important position within the masquerade traditions of Cameroon. Among the Duala, historical examples representing buffalo were associated with men’s ritual associations and were known under the name Nyatti. Documentary sources record their use in ceremonial performances, including contexts connected with funerary rites and community societies.

The buffalo itself carried associations with physical strength, authority and the dangerous power of the natural world. More broadly within Cameroon, buffalo imagery was closely connected with ideas of power and prestige; related buffalo masks and headdresses were used in ceremonial and political contexts by communities of the Cameroon Grassfields.

Rarity and Value:
Duala buffalo masks represent a distinctive and comparatively uncommon sculptural tradition within the wider field of Cameroonian masking arts. Historical Nyatti masks are preserved in major ethnographic and museum collections, and documented examples demonstrate that the tradition was already established by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A closely related Duala buffalo mask entered the Museum of Ethnology in Munich as early as 1888, while other documented examples were collected during the early twentieth century.

The visual strength of the present example lies particularly in its monumental horn structure, elongated proportions and surviving polychrome geometric decoration. Its acquisition in Cameroon further reinforces its geographic provenance and provides an important contextual element for the object.

Origin and Tradition:
The Duala traditionally inhabit the coastal region of Cameroon around the Wouri and Sanaga river areas. Their artistic production included polychrome zoomorphic masks as well as elaborately decorated objects associated with ceremonial and social institutions. Historical records identify buffalo masks used by Duala associations under the name Nyatti.
